Granular Hot Melt Adhesives

KS 201/4 - is a medium viscosity, multipurpose hot melt, offering extremely high heat resistance and is recommended for high speed straightline as well as softform applications. Recommended applications include: veneer, (thick and thin), polyester, melamine, solid wood, PVC, Thick PVC, ABS and laminates.

KS 205 - is a high viscosity, multipurpose, hot melt adhesive. The formula of this premium grade adhesive has been modified utilizing a rubber additive to provide an exceptionally strong, durable and long lasting bond. It is Dorus’ finest, highest quality hot melt. It’s high viscosity, high heat resistance and excellent bonding characteristics make this the ideal all-purpose straightline edgebanding adhesive. Recommended applications include: veneer, (thick and thin), polyester, PVC, Thick PVC, melamine, solid wood, ABS, and laminates.

KS 208/2 - is a medium viscosity, multipurpose, economically priced edgebanding adhesive. The lower viscosity of KS 208/2, fast melting properties, and easy spread and flow characteristics make it ideally suited for old and new, large and small automatic edgebanders. Excellent heat resistance, high feed speed and clean pot performance characteristics make this adhesive one of the best buys in the economy grade edgebanding adhesive market. Recommended applications include: veneer, polyester, melamine, PVC, Thick PVC and laminates.

KS 217 - is a low viscosity, multi-purpose hot melt recommended for granular feed or ‘quick melt’ glue systems. It also performs well in standard glue pot setups. The low viscosity, fast melting properties, and easy spread and flow characteristics make this product an operator favorite. It is also recommended for difficult to bond ‘oily’ veneers like teak and pine. Recommended applications include: veneer, (thick and thin), polyester, PVC, Thick PVC, melamine, solid wood, ABS, tropical and oily veneers and laminates.

KS350 - is a low viscosity, multi-purpose, ‘clear’ hot melt suitable for straightline and softform edgebanding applications, featuring clean pro-cessing, high heat resistance, excellent yield and a virtually invisible glue line. Recommended applications include solid wood, veneer, melamine, HPL, PVC, Thick PVC and ABS.

AS223 - is designed for precoat-ing edgebanding materials. This hot melt should be used in automatic and semi-automatic edgebanders that apply the adhesive directly to the edgebanding material. The low temperature and extended open time make this hot melt ideally suited for precoating PVC as well as veneer and paper products.

Cartridge Adhesive

HKP 21 (Type I)/HKP 25 (Type II) - Dorus is the original manufacturer of Cartridge Adhesives for HolzHer® automatic edgebanders. HKP 21 and HKP 25 were developed for and approved by HolzHer. The viscosity, spread and flow characteristics of these cartridges were developed to meet the stringent requirements of HolzHer’s nozzle application system. The products are multiple screened to ensure that there are no impurities which might clog the nozzles and the viscosity was established to ensure no backflow through the seals.

HKP 21 is our standard grade multi-purpose cartridge; Recommended applications include: veneer (thick and thin), polyester, PVC, Thick PVC, and melamine.

HKP 25 is the premium grade product, giving superior bonding strength and aging characteristics. Recommended applications include:veneer, (thick and thin), polyester, PVC, Thick PVC, melamine, solid wood, ABS and laminate.

PVA Adhesives

ND 183/1 Primer - this specialty water based primer significantly improves the bond on both solid wood and laminate strips. Easy to apply, and inexpensive, ND 183/1 may actually improve hot melt yields while increasing bond strength.

DD 060 Dowel Insertion - this specialty dowel insertion adhesive was formulated for automatic dowel insertion equipment. It has very low viscosity, fast flowing characteristics and fast setup time. DD 060 was formulated to resist clogging in nozzles.

As products and application conditions vary, ESI strongly recommends pretesting of all adhesive and edgebanding combinations before production. The above recommendations are based on our experience only and are not to be construed as guarantees.

Edgebanding Adhesive Application Tips

The following application hints are offered to help ensure maximum productivity and bond quality.

Temperatures Critical

The processing temperature of the adhesive, substrate and edgebanding, and room temperature of the plant in which the edgebander is located are all important factors. ESI recommends all materials be stored at room temperature for a minimum of twenty-four hours prior to use. Cold panels or banding can result in the premature adhesive set-up.  The automatic edgebander should not be located in drafts or where cold air is circulating. This could also cause premature adhesive set-up.  Evidence of premature set-up would be adhesive bonding well to the substrate but not to the edgebanding.
The temperature of the adhesive should be checked on a regular basis with a pyrometer to verify the accuracy of the thermostats in the melting container and application roller. Excessive heat will cause the adhesive to break down, creating charring and odors.  Inadequate heat will cause a poor bond.

Line Speeds

The line speed of the automatic edgebander is also very important. Slower line speeds are more inclined to cause poor bonding than higher speeds.  When operating at a low speed, the adhesive may prematurely set-up before pressure is applied. Should a line speed slower than specified be necessary, it is recommended the application roller thermostat be turned up slightly to compensate for a longer open time.  The temperature should not be increased in excess of 10 degrees Centigrade over the recommended application temperature.  Hot air blowers could also be located on the bander to further extend adhesive open times.  Tests should be performed to determine the best overall temperature based on the line speed being run.

Glue Line Thickness

Glue line thickness is also critical.  An excessively thick glue line will result in a poor bond and leave an unsightly glue line.  Tests should be performed to adjust to the thinnest possible glue line while still giving a strong, durable bond.  Care should be taken that the glue line is uniform and that no skips or voids appear.

Glue Pot Temperature

ESI recommends the glue pot temperature be turned down to approximately 150 degrees Centigrade if the edgebander is not going to be used for an extended period of time.  This temperature will keep the hot melt molten, allow for a fast heat up, and also prevent unnecessary adhesive breakdown and oxidation.
It is also recommended that should the molten adhesive sit in the pot for an extended period of time, it should be stirred or agitated.

All panel edges should be cut square and clean.

Moisture content of veneers or solid wood edgings should not exceed 10 percent.

ESI recommends priming all high pressure laminate before application.  Residue on the back side of high pressure laminate may cause weak or inconsistent bonding.  Priming will ensure an excellent bond.  Dorus offers ND 183/1, a premixed PVA based primer; or a 5:1 mix of solvent based contact adhesive and a compatible solvent will also provide an excellent priming medium.

Glue Pot Maintenance and Cleaning

ESI recommends a regular maintenance schedule for glue pots and application rollers.

Charred or oxidized adhesives should be removed from the pot sides and glue surface before refilling the pot. The glue pot should be kept a minimum of two-thirds full to reduce charring and oxidation on the pot sides. The glue pot and application heads should be completely and thoroughly cleaned at least every sixty days. Excessive build-up of charred materials will reduce the overall effectiveness of the heaters and impair proper heat transfer.

In order to clean the glue pot, insert a ‘t’ shaped stick into the pot while the glue is hot. Allow the glue to cool overnight.  In the morning when the glue pot is turned on, the adhesive will soften from the bottom and sides. The contents of the glue pot can be lifted out once the bottom and sides of the glue are softened. The pot can then be thoroughly cleaned.  Glue pot cleaners are commercially available.

As products and application conditions vary, ESI strongly recommends pretesting all adhesive and edgebanding combinations before production.  The above recommendations are based on our experience only and are not to be construed as guarantees.
